Former Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn 1st Appearance
13 Jan, 2020
Former head of Renault-Nissan Carlos Ghosn in his first public appearance since skipping bail blamed a "plot" against him for his fall. Here's how he went from feted CEO to fugitive.

In his first public appearance after he skipped bail and fled to Lebanon, Carlos Ghosn rejected all accusations of wrongdoing: "These allegations are untrue and I should have never been arrested in the first place." Ghosn said the destruction of his image was "the result of a handful of unscrupulous, vindictive individuals at Nissan," speaking of a smear campaign and even alleging "collusion" between Nissan and the prosecutor in Japan, saying that he fled "political persecution."

"Some of my Japanese friends thought that the only way to get rid of the influence of Renault on Nissan, was to get rid of me," Ghosn said. He named among others former Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa and board member Masakazu Toyoda as part of the plot, alleging the latter had been the link to Japanese authorities.
